Loving an addict is confusing and painful

For parents that are experiencing a loved one in addiction, you are probably feeling exhausted, isolated, scared, and ready just to throw your hands up because everytime you open your mouth and try to help your son/daughter, it's like talking to a brick wall. Every move you make seems to be the wrong one.

Your work life may even be suffering because even though you are physically present at work, mentally you are not. All your attention and focus is worrying about your child, and your performance at work suffers. People are noticing a change in you and not for the better. They may even be telling you open up and let people know what' going on, but when you do, you may experience feeling judged pushing you deeper into isolation and confusion.

When you try to Google and go to forums online researching what to do and how to fix it your child, you may be left feeling more confused than ever because one person says this, and another person says that and it all contradicts each other and you'e left just wanting to pull your hair out. It may seem like you haven't really slept in days or weeks and the exhaustion leaves you sitting in the car crying at stop lights and begging the higher powers that be to just tell you what to do to "fix your child".

Don't know what to do? Jen Maneely does.

Craft Centric’s in-house brewery Fermented Nonsense, will be releasing two new beers in the coming week. Yass Kween Cherry Lime Wheat Beer will be released Tuesday June 11th in time for our Broad City Trivia night. Beauty in the Rains That I See Amber Ale will be released Tuesday June 18th in time for our The Office trivia night.

“Yas Kween” - Cherry Lime Wheat - 5.2% ABV - A perfect summer beer, this wheat beer was brewed with cherry juice and fresh lime zest. It’s easy drinking and with a refreshing slight tartness. You won’t be able to help letting out a “yas kween” after taking a sip.

“Beauty in the Rains That I See” - Amber Ale - 5.1% ABV - This beer was inspired by a Marcus King Band song called Autumn Rains. The fitting lyrics are: “'Cause they don't see the beauty in the rains that I see, amber ale, sweet bud and sunshine”. The beer was brewed with flaked wheat, premium 2-Row, crystal malt, and dry hopped with Cascade, Citra, and Mosaic hops.

“It’s hard to keep up with demand on our small system,” says owner Matt Vaughan, “so we are excited to have two new beers coming out in back to back weeks. Definitely come give them a try while you can!”

About Craft Centric:
Craft Centric Taproom & Bottleshop was voted best North Carolina beer bar by the Brewer’s Association in 2018 and 2019. They have 30 taps that include one cider, one ginger beer, and two wine options. They also carry packaged beer to drink on premise or to-go. Both draft and package selections include some of the best beer to be had both locally and internationally.

Craft Centric was founded in 2017 by Matt Vaughan who opened it as a place for the community to gather and appreciate beer. Both the geek & beer geek parts of Matt are apparent in the store with the Star Wars & Game of Thrones decor and the carefully curated beer selection. In August of 2018, Matt and brewer Josh Austin started Fermented Nonsense Brewing in the back office of Craft Centric. Although it’s Asheville’s smallest brewery, Fermented Nonsense focuses on making beer with big flavor as well as fun and interesting ingredients.

Escape the heat

Now that warmer weather is here for the next few months, thoughts often turn tocooling off. There are many options for wet, cool fun in the mountains of WNC. Of course, there are the municipal pools, but we like to go out into nature for our relief. Here are the top 3 swimming holes in WNC. Grab your swim suits, towels, and a picnic lunch, and come join us in the mountains.

1.Sliding Rock - Located in the Pisgah National Forest, this is a popular spot for good reason. Slide down the 60-foot flat, sloping boulder and make a splash in an eight-foot deep pool, swim a few strokes to the shore, get in line, and do it all over again. Open 10:00 - 6:00 through Labor Day.

2. Skinny Dip Falls - A beautiful waterfall setting for any time of the year. A 3/4 mile hike down the trail at Looking Glass Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 417 brings you to this swimming hole and soaking spot with several waterfalls and pools.

3. Hooker Falls - Head to the DuPont Forest for this wonderful pool with a 12-foot waterfall. A delightful setting for a day of cooling off.

Who's watching your Kids in Asheville?

You need a quality Sitter for your Kids in Asheville, one you can trust. What's a Parent to do?

Childcare Asheville

If you’ve ever faced the challenge of looking for a reliable babysitter or nanny for your child, you know the cliché, “It’s a jungle out there.” Where do you begin? Do you look for family friends with teenaged daughters with some sitting experience? Perhaps you start asking all your friends if they know any reliable sitters they would trust with their own children. It’s not something you can choose lightly – not when the health and safety of your children could be put at risk.

The solution is College Nannies, Sitters & Tutors of Asheville. Franchise owner Jay Cottrell points out that the company’s core concept gives parents total peace of mind. “We provide families with safe, reliable and convenient childcare,” he says.  “We are a personal service that takes the time to get to know our clients and to provide them with a high level of service and access to high-quality, safe, and screened role models for their children.”

Working with College Nannies, Sitters & Tutors has multiple advantages for customers. “Every College Sitter is professionally trained and matched to your child’s unique abilities, interests and style. Can you say that about the kid down the street?” Jay asks. “We’re all about trustworthy childcare. All our sitters are carefully screened and receive ongoing professional training and guidance. And of course, they love children.”

Asheville BabysittersAnother advantage is simple, quick, and easy scheduling. “Book your favorite sitters anytime. With our MySitters® app you can confirm in as little as 20 minutes,” Jay says. “We operate locally, know your neighborhood, and most importantly, we get to know your family personally.”

Jay got into the College Sitters business through his own experiences trying to raise a child and work full-time. “I’ve always sought way/jobs/companies that help people,” Jay said. “After selling a small stake in a previous business in the healthcare sector, I decided to pursue real estate as the next chapter in my life of doing something that can truly help people.  A couple years in my wife and I welcomed our son Ayden. Once she went back to work we struggled to find childcare and were on numerous waiting lists for daycare centers. Since I had the job with “flexible hours” it fell upon me to take care of our son most of the time. Trying to be a full-time dad and work a full-time job was not the easiest to accomplish and maintain a successful career in real estate.”

Conversations with his father about business opportunities and investments led Jay to his next step. “I found what would have been the answer to my childcare issues and knew that it would be for others as well,” he says. “I saw a company with strong values and a great system for providing families with relief and help when they need it most.  I decided to purchase a franchise and move from real estate to helping Build Stronger Families® with College Nannies, Sitters and Tutors.”

Higher income families are the ideal customers for College Nannies, Sitters & Tutors.  “A great fit is Millennial Mom that is the ‘CEO’ of a busy and active family,” Jay says.  “Our customers are generally higher income ($200,000+) families that can appreciate and afford a professional sitter service.”

Sitter and Nanny Jobs Asheville Childcare EmploymentNot all customers want college students as sitters or nannies. “No problem!” Jay says. “Despite what our name suggests, we do not only hire college students.  We hire college students or older. In fact, we are currently hiring active seniors. For instance, in Asheville we have Pam, who is a mother of 4, nurse of many years, and a rock star sitter! She has tons of experience and is very loving and caring when it comes to working with children. Kids are clearly a passion of Pam's! She will engage with them and keep them active and learning. We know she'll be a great fit for any family!”

Pam describes her affinity for children. She says, “I am calm and patient, I have a background in nursing with an understanding of development. I am an experienced mother, who understands the importance of meeting people where they are. I love children, and I advocate and support families and children.”

Jay speaks of the time a customer called him “in anger” about his service. “This is in jest because they then proceed to tell me that their children had such a great time with one of our sitters that their child actually told them to leave and not come home yet. They wanted to keep having fun with the sitter.”

There is a great difference between hiring the kid down the street to babysit, and contracting with College Sitters. One of those differences is price.  “Most people in are used to paying a middle school or high school kid or family member to babysit,” Jay says. “There can be a bit of a sticker shock when they hear the pricing for a professional service like ours.  But there is no company that is more committed to making sure that your family is well cared for and that every College Sitter is safe, reliable and professional. Your family’s safety and well-being are our top priority.

At this time, sitters and nannies are available in Asheville, but the tutoring service will be launched in about 12 to 18 months.

Who's Watching Your Roost?

Home break-ins. It’s probably every homeowners biggest fear. Do you ever find yourself wondering if someone is watching?

According to Ooma, a home phone & security company, 16% of Americans have experienced a home break-in. Whether it’s pranks by neighborhood kids or a legit burglar, your home can be a target regardless of where you live. And there are a plethora of reasons why you could be targeted, but here are the top five listed in order of percent-cause of break-in.

1. Your Neighborhood - 24%

Nearly 1/4 of all American homes are at risk simply based on the neighborhood the home is in. It can even be the surrounding neighborhoods.

2. No Alarm System - 16%

Not having an alarm system is the second leading cause of break-ins. Even if you don’t have an alarm system, putting a sign by your door saying you do helps thwart would-be vandals. If you do have an alarm but no sign, get one.

3. Unlocked Doors - 14%

The bygone days of never locking your doors are, well, gone. While only 14% of Americans claim an unlocked door was the cause of their break-in, a whopping 42% leave doors unlocked. What?

4. Open Windows - 8%

Never, ever leave ground floor level windows unlocked when you are away or sleeping. If you do lock your door, then the next thing a burglar will try is the window.

5. Living in an Apartment Building - 7%

Multiple unit dwellings are often thought to be less of a target for burglary, however it turns out to be the opposite. With many people in and out of these dwellings, it’s hard to keep up with who should be there and who should not. They are an invitation for strangers to scope out. Try to find buildings with locked exterior doors to help up the security level.

A Tip from Roost Home Watch

Even if you do have an alarm system, it’s a good idea to purchase timers for interior and exterior lights to cycle on and off periodically to give the sense the home is occupied. Using a home watch service while away from your home, like Roost Home Watch, provides a sense of security because of the inherent nature of the home watch visit. Picking up newspapers & mail, moving trash bins in & out, physically inspecting doors & windows, and much more default items in our service.

Mark your calendar for Asheville's Beer City Festival 2019!

Over 70 WNC breweries, live music, food, and fun will make the Rodger McGuire Green the place to be on Saturday, June 1. It's all happening from noon until 5:00. Get your tickets while they are still available.

Located in Roger McGuire Park -- designated by the city as Asheville's Front Porch -- this beer festival is the capstone event of Asheville Beer Week, an annual celebration of all things WNC craft beer. To commemorate the 10th year, BCF is taking a fresh, new approach to the average beer fest. Beer City Festival is partnering with Asheville Van Life - who host the largest van rally on the continent - to throw Asheville’s largest lawn party. The vans will serve as "tour-able" pouring stations, with breweries partnering with attending van lifers. Expect light, refreshing summer seasonals to complement the unofficial kick-off to summer party. Beer City Festival is proud to support Asheville Brewers Alliance as their nonprofit partner.

This year's BCF is focusing on the type of beer you want to drink when it's hot - crisp, refreshing, sessionable beer from some of the best brewers in the state.

Considering Video Marketing?

Video Marketing starts with a plan. What type of message do you want to convey? Are you looking to get your business noticed or are you promoting a new product or service? Who are your potential customers and what problem can you solve for them? These questions make it easier to map a course of action when it comes to advertising. What your business is about and how you want to present it will determine the type of video you use.

Videoshortz specializes in short videos that get your business noticed. Most consumers like short videos. They are more likely to watch a video through to the end if it is relevant, quick and to the point.
