One of Mark’s main areas of focus is grief counseling. He says grief is a broader issue than many realize. “Actually, grief is a dimension of every difficult challenge we face in life because difficult challenges involve losses.

- Health due to a serious physical or mental diagnosis
- Our identity and purpose

- Property by natural disaster or crime

Mark calls his method Life Therapy. He says, “I created it out of my education, training, personal life experiences, and over 30 years of professional experience. Life Therapy is unique in several ways:
“It’s not medication therapy, psychotherapy, or mental/behavioral health counseling. Neither is it coaching, mentoring, or consulting.”
“Together my clients and I attend to and take care of their lives. Since there is so much more to their lives than their problems, we view their problems in the broader context of their life: where they’ve been, where they are now, and where they want to go.”
“First, we attend to their healing. By healing, I mean becoming whole and integrated. Even when they’re living with an illness or injury, they can be whole and have a sense of well-being. When they are ready, we clarify where they want to go in their lives and how to get there. Then, I help them get there.”
Mark shares, “A couple came to me after their daughter died in a tragic accident. She was in her early twenties, bright, doing very well in college, and already succeeding in a career. They had been to two other counselors but had not received the help they needed.”
“They were desperate and wanted a quick solution to their grief. There is no quick solution to grief, especially in response to the death of a child. I started by giving them basic, helpful information about grief. They ended our first session saying that they had received more help in our hour together than all of the other hours they spent with others.”
“I met with them for over two years. Not only did they make their way through the complicated grief for their daughter, they made their way through winning a drawn-out law suit concerning their daughter’s death, adapting as a family, establishing a foundation in her honor, helping young people through the foundation, sending their son off into the world as a young adult, moving to a new house, taking on several additional professional responsibilities, and too many other things to tell here.”
